Because it's all about the food
What kind of cake is under the flag? It's tradition around here for me to make this cake with a jello poke cake under it. I usually do white cake with red jello of some sort. It's so good to eat a cold cake on a hot July day!
That's my mom's all-purpose chocolate cake underneath -- cocoa, yogurt/buttermilk, eggs etc. Very quick and tasty. I was under orders not to fuss on this cake, lol! Jello poke? What's that?
OMG, jello poke cakes are so funny. You make a regular cake and when it comes out of the oven you poke holes in it, then you pour jello over it, then you refrigerate the whole thing. (jello mixed with the boiling water, not set)You can make any combination of flavors. Lemon cake with lemon jello is awesome. I have also seen poke cakes that you pour other things over them--like sweetened condensed milk. I don't ever eat jello, this is just a kitschy thing I made once for laughs, and everybody loves it for it's trashcan americana appeal, so it has become our Fourth of July tradition. It's actually quite good, lol! (now if I could only find organic jello!)
Don't they have an organic jello-type product at Whole Foods? Am I making that up?
I have seen vegetarian jello, so there is probably organic vegetarian jello...but I think the process to make real gelatin doesn't fit under the govt organic standards...I could be wrong. I actually haven't looked recently and these product lines are expanding exponentially these days. (which is cool) Of course, I also live in a small town and we don't have Wild Oats or Whole Foods, we just have our little healthy food co-op (I'm on the Board of Directors, and we are in the process of building a new 1.5 million dollar store right now that will have more stuff) I also run a buying club so have access to wholesale warehouses, but they don't seem to stock organic gelatin. (last time I looked) I will check it out again though, thanks for the heads up. :)
there use to be a company that made organic jello's. However, lately I cannot find it neither.
