Snowy Saturday Cooking
Today we were supposed to have blizzard-like conditions, or at least a lot of snow, so I--like everyone else around here--went to the store to stock up on bread and milk. Though in my case it was organic buttermilk, which I plan to use for cinnamon doughnut muffins, and tortillas. The chicken was turned into braised chicken with apples and sage, using a recipe from Gourmet magazine. The mushroom risotto featured dried shiitakes (all the loose ones at WF looked slimy that day), a little Marsala, and pearl/Israeli couscous, which is bigger than regular couscous and adds great texture. The snow finally started this afternoon, and I'm not sure when it's going to end, but I've been happy to sit on my sofa, watch movies, and eat yummy, warming winter food.

I think I saw that recipe for the chicken and apples. It's in the current issue of Gourmet, right? I have only skimmed it, not read it all yet. Your pic of this looks great though. I love eating cooked apples. We chop them and toss them with chopped onion and roast them as the bed for b/s chicken breasts, and they caramelize in with the onions. yum! (this is good with whole chopped lemons as well--skin and all)
It's from the December 2005 issue. Have you ever seen Michael Chiarello on the Food Network? I saw him do a great recipe the other day with chicken, rosemary, and roasted lemons. If you're not familiar with him, I think you'd really like his recipes--relaxed, but tasty, good food.
I'm embarassed to say that I keep all of my foodie mags around and pick them up when I can, so even though I just read the recipe, it was no doubt, the December issue still sitting in my living room, lol. I don't know of Michael Chiarello, I will go check him out, thanks. :) (cham, off to search tivo)
