Merry Christmas!

For dessert, we had a Pooch de Noel, a variation on the traditional Buche de Noel. We call it Devil Dog, a takeoff on the dog's Halloween toy, which is shown here beside the cake. The basic recipe, from Saveur, makes a very moist, chocolatey roulade, with a chocolate buttercream filling, and the icing is an even more chocolatey ganache.

Our Christmas dinner: roast chicken with lemons and rosemary, roasted beets, green beans with slivered almonds, challah rolls, and Hasselback roasted potatoes, which were a new recipe to me, but very tasty. And since they all disappeared, I'm guessing the others agreed.
